Opening this anniversary year we will welcome very special guests! Rev. Dr. John Gilmore Om Prakash played a crucial role in helping see our future as a congregation. We are delighted to welcome him back on January 19th to talk about “Life and the Greater Work.”
Congregation leader Darcy Hall remembers with absolute clarity several years ago when the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Essex County, fading in numbers and mission, was shown the path to its future by Reverend Dr. John Gilmore Om Prakash. He described two organizations—one that flourished and one that died. The difference, he thought, was that the organization that survived owned its land. “Your greatest asset,” he said, “is that you own your own buildings. You can use this space to create community with like-minded people and that, in turn, will grow your mission.” This was also a valuable lesson in problem-solving. We assumed that our buildings were a dilapidated deficit that hampered our goals. It took a wise outsider to show us what we couldn’t see: the buildings are the mission. Through Faith+Works, the HUUB and the University of Orange, this is what we bring to Orange—a campus of diverse spaces where community-generated work, gardening, learning, meeting, social events, parties, potlucks, music and art find a welcome and loving home.
