There was a period of several hundred years when Korea was shut off to Japan. The Japanese prized a particular kind of Korean pottery, which they couldn’t get during that period. They established an academy to try to replicate the pottery, but they couldn’t. When relations reopened, the academy sent a delegation to Korea to learn the secret. They found out that the Korean potters made the wheels by eyeballing, not by measuring, and none of them was even.
